PhD Title: A Phenomenological Analysis of the Disengagement from Radical Social Groups with Varying Levels of Entitativity
Anticipated Completion Date: : July 2012PhD Abstract
The process of commitment to a radical social group can be subjected to interruptions causing prior socialisation to be impaired and the consideration of disengagement becomes likely. These interruptions include invalidating experiences or perceptions that initiate dissonance and dissatisfaction. The purpose of the proposed research is to develop a model of disengagement by exploring the group and individual psychological process experienced by individuals who self-identify as ex-members of radical social groups with varying levels of entitativity, (the perception of the group as a coherent entity). These are social groups that express an extremist ideology; including the willingness to use, support, or facilitate violence. The methodology will incorporate a qualitative design with in-depth interviews with ex-members based on previous disengagement literature. The data analysis will employ a phenomenological approach with a guiding framework from Ebaugh?s (1988) study into exiting social roles and literature on the normative, affective and continuance influence causes of disillusionment. This study will build on knowledge of disengagement and highlight the vulnerabilities of radical social groups.
